Women’s Volleyball Splits Matches at Annual Three-Way Tournament

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College hosted its annual ECC Three-Way Tournament featuring College of the Canyons and Grossmont and came away with a split in its two contests Friday afternoon at the ECC South Gym.

EL CAMINO COLLEGE 3, COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS 0

In the first match of the day, the Warriors recorded their first home sweep of the season as they dispatched the Cougars 25-15, 25-18, 25-19. Mikayla Clark led the way with 15 kills while Kayla Conley and Ginia Goods added five apiece in the victory. Caitlin Donatucci had 22 assists and Kelly Donatucci added a team-high 16 digs in the victory.

The Warriors led wire-to-wire in the opening frame as the Donatucci twins combined for four aces in the early going to get the Warriors out in front to a 8-1 lead and they never looked back. Goods had all five of her kills in the opening frame while Clark added five of her own.

In the second, neither team could expand any lead past two points until the Warriors put together a three-point sput on a kill from Jocelyn Lacroix, an attacking error by Ricki Patenaude and finally an ace by Kylee Glickman to give ECC an 18-14 cushion.

The Cougars cut it back down to two points at 20-18 but the Warriors closed out the set on a 5-0 run, all points gained on one bad set and four attacking errors by the Cougars.

The Warriors gained a six-point cushion midway through the third set and never looked back to complete the sweep and start the day with a victory.

GROSSMONT 3, EL CAMINO COLLEGE 1

The Warriors battled the undefeated Griffins, who swept Canyons in the second match of the day, in a four-set nail-biter but the Griffins got too much offense from sophomore Shaney Lipscomb as the Warriors fell 23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-22.

Clark tallied 18 more kills to lead ECC against Grossmont and Lacroix added nine but anytime the Warriors gained momentum, the Griffins' sophomore answered with a kill to keep the Warriors at bey. Lipscomb finished with a match-high 21 kills and a .317 attacking percentage.

For the Warriors, Caitlin Donatucci dished out 33 assists and Clark recorded another double-double with 10 digs.

The Warriors will be away from home for their next match with their final non-conference affair at Orange Coast on Sept. 18. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
