Warriors Season Comes to an End at Canyons

No. 11 El Camino College saw its 2017 season come to an end Saturday night with a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-23) defeat to No. 3 College of the Canyons at the Cougar Cage in round two of the CCCAA Women's Volleyball State Championship playoffs.

The Warriors fell to the Cougars on Saturday night after winning their first matchup in five sets back on Sept. 15. Jerephina Leilua led the Warriors with nine kills with Sarah Dyer (10) and Keily Morimoto (11) combined for 21 assists in the loss.

Aiko Waters added six kills and 13 digs with Renee Brydon chipping in with four kills and four blocks. Kiana Takahashi posted 11 digs, Jossie Tomita added eight and Jaylin Motley recorded four kills and two blocks in her final match for ECC.

The Cougars jumped out to a good lead in the first set and would go on to claim the opening set to take a 1-0 lead. The next two sets were more competitive as the two teams needed overtime in the second frame. The Warriors took a 23-22 advantage on a block by Brydon but the Cougars scored four of the next five points to take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Warriors came out firing, taking a 6-1 lead and led 12-5 at one point. But the Cougars kept chipping away at the ECC lead and eventually overtook the Warriors, edging ECC in the third set to secure the win and advance to the next round.

In head coach Liz Hazell's first season, the Warriors finished up with a 20-5 overall record and their eighth straight conference title.
