Motley, Waters Lead Warriors past East Los Angeles

TORRANCE, Calif. – Jaylin Motley and Aiko Waters led an El Camino College offense that overwhelmed visiting East Los Angeles 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-12) on Wednesday night at the ECC South Gym.

The Warriors (8-2) outhit the Huskies (7-5) .390 (41-11-77) to .042 (20-17-72) on the night as Motley and Waters combined for 27 kills. Waters also logged another double-double with 11 digs and Renee Brydon added nine kills and three blocks. Sarah Dyer dished out 26 assists while Keily Morimoto added 11 helpers and two service aces.

For the Huskies, three players tallied five kills and Aifili Tuita'u dished out 15 assists in the loss.

The Warriors stormed out in front in the first set as they attacked at a .625 (12-2-16) clip while holding the Huskies to a .000 (5-5-17) percentage in the opening frame. The Huskies scored the first point of the set before the Warriors ran off 15 of the next 20 points to take a commanding lead and they never looked back. Motley hammered down five kills on six attempts without an error in the first and tossed in all three of her service aces in the opening set.

In the second set, the Huskies jumped out to a 5-1 advantage thanks to four kills and a service ace. The teams would be tied five times in the second and traded the lead on four occasions before a 6-0 scoring run by ECC turned a one-point deficit into a 19-14 advantage. The Warriors would not relinquish the lead and, despite the Huskies fighting off four set points, ECC would take the set and a 2-0 lead.

The third set was never in doubt as the Warriors led wire-to-wire, attacking at a .556 percentage (18-3-37) to cruise to victory. Waters and Motley each tallied six kills in the final set to put the match away.

The Warriors will return to action on Friday night for their first road match since Sept. 1 when they head to Rio Hondo. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
