Warriors Sweep past Mount San Antonio

TORRANCE, Calif. – Jaylin Motley led the Warriors offense while Sophia Loiola and Renee Brydon sent everything back at the net as No. 5 El Camino College swept Mount San Antonio 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 28-26) Friday night at the ECC South Gym.

The Warriors (7-2) dominated the first two sets and outhit the Mounties (2-9) .333 (38-11-81) to .069 (30-24-87) for the match. Motley registered 10 kills on the night to lead the Warriors while Brydon had seven blocks (one solo) and Loiola added five blocks at the net. Sarah Dyer and Keily Morimoto combined to dish out 32 assists.

For the Mounties, Jada Sharpe led all players with 11 kills on the night but no other Mt. SAC player had more than six kills on the night.

The Warriors never trailed in the first set and held the Mounties to a -.083 hitting percentage (5-7-24) in the opening frame, doubling up the Mounties to take a quick 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was close early as the teams were tied six times and traded the lead on four occasions, but a 5-0 spurt for ECC turned a one-point deficit into a 14-10 lead. The Mounties would cut the deficit to two but would get no closer as the Warriors closed out the frame on a 10-4 run.

The Mounties best opportunity came in the third set as they jumped out to a 7-2 advantage to open the frame. The offense posted its best percentage, attacking at a .294 clip (17-7-34) in the third. They also scored four straight points late to turn a 23-20 deficit into a set point.

But the Warriors fought it off along with another set point before Loiola capitalized on an errant dig attempt by the Mounties and smashed down her second kill of the night to secure the victory for ECC in overtime.

The Warriors will return to action Wednesday night as they host East Los Angeles College at the ECC South Gym. First serve is at 6 p.m.
