Motley and Morimoto Lead Warriors to Pair of Sweeps at Long Beach Quad Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Jaylin Motley and Keily Morimoto shined offensively for El Camino College as the Warriors scored a pair of 3-0 sweeps over San Diego Mesa and Saddleback on Friday afternoon at the Long Beach Quad Tournament hosted by Long Beach City College.

MATCH ONE: ECC 3, S.D. Mesa 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-21)

The Warriors and Olympians battled in a tough match despite the end result as each team had its fair share of chances in each set to gain the upper hand. Fortunately for the Warriors, Morimoto posted a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs while Aiko Waters and Motley combined for 25 kills in the match to lift ECC to a victory in three. The Warriors fell behind 7-1 in the third set but managed to run off a 12-4 scoring run, much of it on Renee Brydon's serve to gain control of the match and they never looked back. Sarah Dyer also dished out 14 assists in the victory to start off the day on the right note for the Warriors.

MATCH TWO: ECC 3, Saddleback 0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-11)

The Warriors wrapped up a perfect day on the court against the Gauchos, needing overtime to take the first set after letting three set points slip away. But Waters' drop shot along the far sideline secured the opening set for ECC to put the pressure on the Gauchos, who needed five sets to defeat Long Beach in their first match of the day.

The Gauchos mounted their stand in the second, jumping out fast with three straight points and led 14-11 at one point. But the Warriors wore down their opponents, using a 6-1 scoring run to take the lead for good and finishing the frame scoring 14 of the last 20 points to take a 2-0 lead.

Dyer did the rest for the Warriors in the third set, serving the Warriors to a commanding 20-10 lead and they never looked back as they ran away with the final frame and the match.

Motley was spectacular against the Gauchos, smashing down a season-high 18 kills while Waters finished with 12. Dyer finished with 15 assists and four aces while Morimoto added 14 assists in the final match of the day.

The Warriors start the season 4-0 and will return to the ECC South Gym on Wednesday as they welcome Cypress for a non-conference match. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
