Hazell Era Begins with Dominating Win over Orange Coast

COSTA MESA, Calif. – In the first match in the Liz Hazell era, El Camino College picked up right where it left off as the Warriors opened the 2017 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-10) sweep over Orange Coast College Friday afternoon at Peterson Gym.

Hazell, who took over the program after longtime coach Levalley Pattison retired from indoor volleyball after last season, recorded her first career win as head coach and was pleased with the way her team performed on Friday.

"We did a great job serving tough to keep them out of rhythm," Hazell said. " Our setters distributed the ball well and overall it was a solid performance by everyone and a great way to start the season."

Sophomore Aiko Waters paced the Warriors (1-0) offense with a double-double, leading the team with 13 kills and 13 assists. Jaylin Motley pitched in with 11 kills and Jossie Tomita anchored the defensive effort with 17 digs. Sarah Dyer dished out 22 assists in the victory.

The Warriors used massive scoring runs throughout the match to take control. In the first set, the teams were deadlocked 3-3 before a 9-1 scoring run helped the Warriors pull away and take the opening set.

In the second set, the Pirates (0-1) scored the first point of the frame before ECC mounted a 12-2 run to take command. Waters (four kills) and Motley (three kills) ignited the offense in the second to put the Warriors up 2-0 in the match.

Another huge run helped the Warriors put the match away in the third as they used a 12-5 spurt to turn a 3-2 deficit into a healthy 14-8 lead and ECC never looked back.

The Warriors will open up the ECC South Gym on Wednesday night as they welcome Santa Monica to ECC for the home opener. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
