Women Go Undefeated in Day One of CCCAA State Championships
OJAI, Calif. – The El Camino College women's tennis team had a perfect opening day at the 2019 CCCAA State Championships at Ojai Valley Tennis Club in Ojai, Calif.
The Warriors had all three of their singles competitors win their matches with both doubles squads also winning their matches to move on to day two.
Warriors top singles player and No. 6 South seed Riko Tanagawa defeated Insun Janigian of Fresno in the Round of 32, dominating the match with a 6-0, 6-1 result.
Lina Ito, the No. 9 South seed, needed three sets but came out victorious nonetheless, defeating Mailinh Troung of Foothill College 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Madi Giese rounded out the Warriors success on Thursday, scoring a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mary DiMaggio of Shasta College.
On the doubles side, the No. 2 South seeded duo of Giese and Ito cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ashley Castro and Savanna Schreiner of Fullerton College to advance to Friday.
Amanda Vitanatchi and Tanagawa also scored a Round of 64 victory on Thursday, defeating Roxy Layden and Ghita Zhari of Santa Rosa, 7-6, 6-1.
All the Warriors competitors return to action Friday morning with berths in the Round of 16 and possibly the quarterfinals at stake.
