Cindy Ngo Sets New Pool Record As Warriors Host Long Beach City and LA Trade in Dual Meet

TORRANCE, Calif. - The Warriors hosted Long Beach City and LA Trade Tech at home on Friday afternoon. The men's team (3-2) beat Tech Beavers 204-28 but lost to the Vikings 155-107. The women's team (5-1) had a great day at the pool, beating the Tech Beavers 194-67 and the Vikings 183-79, with Cindy Ngo going on to set a new pool record in the 50 yard free.

"Long Beach men had too much depth as they beat our men by a good margin in spite of El Camino winning 7 out of 15 events," commented Coach Corey Stanbury.

For the men, Jason Gottschalk took 1st place finishes in the 1,000 yard freestyle as well as the 500 yard freestyle. Ryo Kagawa had an expressive day as well, finishing on top in all three of his events. In the 100 yard breastroke he came in at 1:00.90 while finishing the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:17.60. Kagawa ended the 200 yard individual medley in 2:07.80. Ian Pallares took both the 200 yard fly and the 100 yard fly for 1st place finishes.

Standouts for the women included Cindy Ngo, who took 1st in all of her events and set a new pool record of 25.25 in the 50 yard free. Previously, the record was held by Laurie Kent in 1982 (25.16) who was not only a swimmer for the Warriors but an El Camino Hall of Fame recipient and State Champion.

The women won almost every event except for the 100 yard and 200 yard backstroke. Bethany Andrade managed 3rd in the 200 yard backstroke but took 1st in the 100 yard breaststroke. Samantha Beattie also had a good day in the pool. She lead the 200 yard fly at 2:45.30 while coming in 2nd in the 100 yard fly and 200 yard individual medley.

"We had a lot of good swims by everyone on the team," shared Coach Stanbury. "We seem to be progressing as we should leading up to the end of the season."

The Warriors will face Chaffey and Pasadena in their final dual meet of the season, "Pasadena will be a difficult team to beat for both men and women, but we have a good chance. Then the Pasadena Invitational will be a final tuneup for the Conference Championships where everybody will be trying to qualify for the State Championships. This is where we put on the expensive technical suits and shave bodies for the ultimate taper."
