2017 Women’s Soccer Year In Review

2017 SEASON IN REVIEW: The 2017 season for the El Camino College women's soccer team was up-and-down adventure from start to finish.   After finishing last season with an (11-6-4, 4-2-2) record the Warriors almost matched that in 2017 with a (11-9-1, 5-3) record.   ECC played very well at home games and had a 7-3-1 record vs a 4-6 record on the road.  Out of the eight different teams that the Warriors lost against including against Cerritos twice, seven of those teams made the CCCAA playoffs.

After starting 2016 unbeaten for the first two months, this season was different.  The Warriors began the campaign with a 1-1 draw against a solid Orange Coast College side.   The month of September was rough for the Warriors and they finished with a 2-6 record for the month.  The 3-0 win against Santa Ana College was the turning point for the Warriors season as they played a dominating display of soccer against the Dons.  Although they finished September with losses to Long Beach on the road and Cerritos at home, they were both very hard fought games.

October flipped the season around for the Warriors.  After going into the month with a 2-6-1 record they went 7-2 in the month of October.  They won six games in a row from October 3rd to October 20th.  They outscored their opponents 20-9 in October and the defense held four clean sheets.  Their two losses in October were against two very good teams in Rio Hondo and the defending state champion Cerritos.

The Warriors added two more wins in November against Compton and LA Harbor to finish the season.  The Warriors fell a little short of qualifying for the CCCAA playoffs.

Maddy Simones capped off a fantastic freshman season for the Warriors with two goals against LA Harbor to give her twelve goals for the season.  During ECC's red hot October, Simones scored in five straight games from October 6th to October 20th.  Simones scored a brace three different times in the season vs LA Harbor twice and against Long Beach City College.  Simones was named to the All-SCC South Division first team.

Taylor Herm had a great debut season for the Warriors.  While playing at center back and outside back for the Warriors, Herm was credited with eight point for the season via three goals and two assists.  Herm played in all twenty one games for the Warriors and contributed to the seven clean sheets the defense kept during the season.   Herm was named to the All-SCC South Division first team.

Jennifer Vargas was an anchor for the Warrior backline after spending last season with LA Harbor.  Vargas played in twenty one games for the Warriors and helped contributed to the seven cleans the defense kept during the season.  Vargas was named to the All-SCC South Division first team.

Isabel Rojas took over this season as the No.1 goalkeeper for the Warriors.  Rojas started 18 games for the Warriors at goalkeeper and had an 8-6 record with one shutout.  Rojas logged 1,260 minutes and made 82 saves to go along with a .782 save percentage and a 1.69 goals against average. Rojas was named to the All-SCC South Division second team.

Ashley Lopez and Jodie Brennan also garnered All-SCC South Division second team honors.

There was also great contributions from two freshman on the team.  Monica Bernardino was second on the team with thirteen points for the season.  She scored three goals and was credited with seven assists for the season.  Bernardino scored the game winning goal against LA Valley.   Robin Riggs was third on the team with twelve points.  Riggs joined the team five games into the season and scored on her season debut against Mt. San Jacinto College.  Riggs scored five goals to go along with two assists.
