Simones Nets Her First but Warriors Fall on Late Goal to Fullerton

TORRANCE, Calif. – With time winding down in Tuesday afternoon's match against Fullerton, El Camino College seemed poised to come away with points against the Hornets.

But Fullerton's Brianna Remedios took a pass from Brooke Morris in the 85th minute and buried it past goalkeeper Kelly Gallagher to stun the Warriors with a 2-1 defeat at Murdock Stadium.

The Warriors (1-2-0) suffered their second straight defeat while the Hornets (2-0-0) stayed perfect on the young season. Madeleine Simones netted her first goal of the season for ECC in a losing effort, scoring on a penalty kick in the 40th minute to tie the score at one apiece.

Gallagher logged her first action at home for the Warriors, entering the match in the second half to mind the net. She made four saves. Isabel Rojas made two saves in the first half and then played in the field during the second half.

Overall, the Warriors were outshot 15-9 for the match but both teams had four shots on target. Each team had three corner kicks and the Hornets were whistled for seven fouls while ECC had six infractions.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as Sophia Arrieta glided a free kick over the outstretched mitts of Rojas and tucked it in just under the crossbar to put the visitors ahead, 1-0.

It stayed that way until the 40th minute as the Warriors applied the pressure on the Hornets defense, eventually drawing a foul inside the box and were awarded a penalty shot.

Simones drew the assignment and beat goalkeeper Savannah Dyer to the right side for the equalizer.

The Warriors will turn around and host another Orange Empire Conference foe as Irvine Valley visits Murdock Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
