Turnovers Prove Costly as Warriors Fall to Rio Hondo

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College had issues holding on to the ball throughout Wednesday night's game against Rio Hondo and it proved costly in a 74-55 loss at the ECC North Gym.

The Warriors (1-3) turned the ball over 27 times on Wednesday and the Roadrunners (6-3) capitalized with 35 points off the mistakes. In contrast, the Warriors scored just eight points off 13 Rio Hondo turnovers on the night.

Alexia Mason led the way for ECC with 16 points and eight rebounds with four assists. Ashley Nguyen added 14 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals but turned it over seven times in the loss. Teairra Anderson scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench.

The Roadrunners were firing on all cylinders offensively as five players scored in double figures. Amanda Lee led the way with 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting and 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Amy Navarro, Sally Smith and Donteylor Maxwell scored 11 points apiece and Jennyfer Morales scored 10 in the win.

The Warriors hung around in the first half, holding Rio Hondo to just nine points in the second quarter to trim the Rio Hondo lead to 29-25 at the break. But the Roadrunners were on fire from distance in the third quarter as they went 10-for-17 from the field in the quarter including 5-for-9 from beyond the arc to extend the lead to 15 and the Warriors never recovered.

The Warriors will look to bounce back on Friday night as they host Irvine Valley at the ECC North Gym. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
