Women’s Basketballl Claims Third Straight Conference Title

TORRANCE, Calif. – It was not easy, but El Camino College staged a fourth-quarter comeback to down visiting Compton 68-60 to clinch its third consecutive South Coast Conference, South Division title Friday night at the ECC South Gym.

With the victory, the Warriors (23-6, 9-1) made history with their first ever three-peat atop the SCC and were the first to claim three straight SCC-South Division crowns since Cerritos from 2008-10. The Warriors have now won four SCC titles in the past five years and it is the sixth conference title in school history.

The win did not come easy as, despite only winning two games all season, the visiting Tartars (2-20, 1-8) gave the Warriors all they could handle.

At one point, the Warriors trailed by 10 points with 54 seconds left in the third quarter. That period proved to be a nightmare for ECC as they went ice cold from the field, hitting just 3-of-15 shots in the period and 1-for-6 from distance. The charity stripe was anything but that for ECC in the period as they went 3-for-12 from the line.

In a game that had seven ties and four lead changes, the Warriors made their push right away in the fourth quarter, going on a 13-2 scoring run to retake the lead at 57-53. The Tartars would not go away though as they trimmed the deficit back to one on a couple of occasions and had a few shots to take the lead.

But the Warriors defense held and the team closed the game on an 8-1 run to seal the victory and the title, which they will share with Cerritos after the Falcons defeated L.A. Harbor on Friday night.

The Warriors will find out their postseason future when the brackets are released on Sunday. Keep looking to ECCWarriors.com and twitter @ECCWarriors for updates on the postseason future.
