Softball Opens Regular Season With Pair of Victories

El Camino College opened the 2020 regular season on a high note, scoring a pair of victories over Southwestern and Citrus on Friday at Citrus College.

EL CAMINO COLLEGE 3, SOUTHWESTERN 2 (8 INN.)

The Warriors opened the year with some extra-innings softball, ultimately defeating Southwestern on a walk-off, two-run double from sophomore Elizabeth Cortez in the eighth inning.

The Warriors clung to a 1-0 lead for six innings after Clarissa Chiquete led off the game with a solo home run to left field. But the Jaguars tied things up in the sixth inning after Natalia Ojeda doubled in Samantha Green with one out in the inning.

The teams went into extras and the Jaguars gained the advantage as Erika Anders scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning after starting off the frame on second base, giving the Jaguars a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Sarah Reels was placed on second to start the frame and she moved to third after Alani Gasca singled to start the inning. Gasca would take second base and then both runners scored after Cortez laced a one-out double down the right-field line, giving the Warriors the victory.

It was Cortez's only hit of the game in two at-bats. The Warriors managed just four hits in the game and also committed four errors but still pulled out the win.

The Warriors will return to action on Tuesday afternoon with their home opener against L.A. Mission. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m
