Softball Hosts Fullerton for Super Regionals

No. 4 El Camino College hosts the California Community College Softball SoCal Super Regionals this weekend against No. 5 Fullerton. The Warriors are looking for their second consecutive trip to the CCCAA State Championships after advancing to the final round for the first time in program history in 2018.

FEELING SUPER

The Warriors have advanced to the CCCAA Super Regionals in four of the previous five years including three consecutive trips. The last time the Warriors did not advance to this round came in 2016 when Fullerton defeated El Camino in three games. This is the second straight year the Warriors will host the CCCAA Super Regionals after the tournament format switched to four Super Regional sites in 2018. Last year, the Warriors made the program's first ever trip to the CCCAA State Championships.

EVERYBODY'S ALL AMERICANS

Sophomores Diamond Lewis and Jocelyn Hernandez were each named to the 2019 NFCA Cal-JC All-American Team this week. It is Lewis' second straight selection while Hernandez picks up her first nod after playing at the University of Redlands in her freshman season.

REGIONAL SWEEPS

Both teams advanced to the second round after scoring sweeps in their respective regionals. The Warriors walloped San Diego Mesa 8-0 in five innings in game one and then got a clutch two-out, two-run single from Mina Nakawake in game two to lift ECC to a 2-1 victory to advance.

The Hornets had similar results, although flipped in reverse. They edged College of the Canyons, 4-2, in game one but then coasted to a run-rule victory in game two with an 8-0 decision.

LAST MEETING

The Warriors and Hornets played each other early on in the season at Fullerton on Jan. 30. In just the third game of the season, the Warriors struggled offensively with only three hits but were deadlocked in a 3-3 tie after two-and-a-half innings. But the Hornets would score four unanswered runs and would go on to score a 7-4 victory over ECC, one of just six losses by the Warriors on the season.

CIRCLE IT

Jocelyn Hernandez did not pitch in the only meeting between the teams on Jan. 30. The All-American figures to pitch at least once this weekend and possibly twice if the series goes all three games. She is 16-1 on the season with a 1.34 ERA along with two saves on the year. Meanwhile, the Warriors faced both of Fullerton's top pitchers back in January. Lulu Vasquez drew the start, going three innings and allowing three runs. On the season, Vasquez pitched in 30 games and tossed 131.1 innings, posting an 18-2 overall record. She tallied 99 strikeouts and posted a 1.55 ERA.

The Warriors saw Jessica Lopez in the last four innings of that game in January. She went four innings and allowed one earned run despite not allowing a hit. She walked six but also fanned seven in the victory. On the year, Lopez led the team with 132 innings pitched and 195 strikeouts to go along with a 0.95 ERA.

FEELING TWENTY

The Warriors have been on a roll for the last month and a half. They enter the CCCAA Super Regionals in the midst of a 20-game winning streak. In that stretch that began on March 23 against College of the Canyons, the Warriors have outscored their opponents 132-30 and recorded seven run-rule victories.
