Softball Scores Seventh Straight Victory

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College score five unanswered runs to overcome an early deficit and defeat Rio Hondo, 5-1, in a South Coast Conference contest Tuesday afternoon at the ECC Softball Field.

The Warriors (23-6, 14-2) recorded their seventh straight victory after overcoming an early 1-0 hole on Tuesday. The Roadrunners (5-22, 1-14) touched up starter Jocelyn Hernandez for a quick run in the first inning.

Samantha David singled to center to lead off the game and then, with two outs, advanced to second on a hit batter and scored on a fielder's choice to put the Roadrunners up by a run early.

The Warriors would tie things up in the second inning as Alena De La Torre singled up the middle with one out and then stole second. She took third on a throwing error and scored the tying run on an RBI groundout by Helaina Gallardo.

In the third, Diamond Lewis gave the Warriors the lead with an RBI double to right, scoring Marissa Garza to make it 2-1.

The Warriors put the game away in the fourth as Kassidy Robinson blasted a two-run home run to cap off a three-run inning to put ECC up 5-1.

Hernandez gave up a leadoff single in the fourth before retiring six straight batters and then gave way to Jasmine Apodaca, who pitched two scoreless innings to secure the win.

Hernandez picked up her ninth victory of the season in the circle after going five innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits. She struck out seven without issuing a walk.

Offensively, Robinson led the Warriors as she went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Warriors will return to action Thursday afternoon as they host Cerritos at the ECC Softball Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
