Weishoff’s Gem Gives Warriors Victory over Santa Ana in Regional Opener

TORRANCE, Calif. - Maisie Weishoff went the distance in a complete game shutout as the Warriors defeated Santa Ana 1-0 in Game One of the CCCAA Southern California Regionals.  

The game was a masterful pitchers duel between Maisie Weishoff of El Camino College (32-9) and Kali Kitsinis of the Santa Ana College Dons (23-16).  Weishoff threw a complete game allowing only 8 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 1 batter. Kitsinis went the distance for the Dons and allowed just two hits, one run, one walk, and struck out three batters.

The Warriors scored the only run of the game in the 1st inning.  Annie Adamos drew a two out walk and stole second base with two strikes on Ashley Machado.  Machado then ripped a pitch through the right side of the infield easily allowing Adamos to score.

The Warriors would only get two more runners on base the rest of the game.  Ronni Silas reached on base in the 2nd inning on an infield error and Karla Calderon reached the bases in the 6th inning after a single through the left side.  Kitsinis had retired twelve straight batters from the second inning to the sixth inning.

Weishoff was cruising through the first four innings of the game before the Dons made it interesting.  The Dons were swinging at first pitches which resulted in quick outs for the Warriors.

Santa Ana reached third base in the last two innings of the game.  In the sixth inning, Santa Ana had back to back singles with two outs.  On the second hit of the inning the El Camino outfield defense made things interesting by misplaying the ball which allowed the runner on second to advance to third.  But Weishoff induced a flyout to centerfield to end the game.

The Dons would again make the 7th inning an interesting one.  After two quick groundouts, Genesis Pulido hit a base hit to center field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch.  Karlee Rivera hit an infield single to third base after a diving stop by Diamond Lewis to give the Dons runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs.  Weishoff got the last batter of the inning to fly out to shallow right field to end the game and the hand the Warriors the victory.

The Warriors and Dons will meet again tomorrow for Game 2 at 12:00 PM.  Game Three will be played approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2 if the game is necessary.
