Lewis, Weishoff and Walkoff Win Highlight Warriors' Roller Coaster Saturday

TORRANCE, Calif. – It took extra innings in one instance and an offensive surge in another but when it was all said and done, El Camino College extended its season long winning-streak to six games with victories over Fullerton and College of the Canyons on Saturday at the ECC Softball Field.

Diamond Lewis had a great day at the plate and Maisie Weishoff was stellar in the circle for the Warriors in both games as the Warriors swept the day in non-conference action.

EL CAMINO COLLEGE 3, FULLERTON 2 (8 INNINGS)

The Warriors scratched out a pair of runs in the first two innings before the Hornets responded with two in the third to tie things up and the game stayed that way through seven innings. In the eighth, the Hornets led off with a sacrifice bunt to move runner Kindy Favata to third base with one out. But reliever Clarissa Chiquete made sure the runner never advanced any further as she got Eryka Springer to hit a weak groundout to first and then Kassandra Salazar to ground out to third to get out of the inning unscathed.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Warriors placed Ashley Machado on second base to start the inning and Annie Adamos laid down a great bunt to move Machado over to third. Alyssa Wing and Alena De La Torre both walked to load the bases for Kassidy Robinson. The left fielder got the job done, hitting a grounder to the hole at short. Danielle Rico made a diving stop but could not get up in time to make a throw home so she got the force out at third, allowing Machado to bring in the winning run and give the Warriors the victory to start the day off on the right note.

Weishoff allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of work while Lewis was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Robinson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI and Adamos finished 1-for-2 with a RBI.

EL CAMINO COLLEGE 9, CANYONS 1 (5 INNINGS)

After needing extra innings in their first game, the Warriors clocked out early in the final game of the day as they downed the Cougars, who defeated Fullerton 12-1 prior to this game, with a run-rule victory in five innings.

Lewis starred in the last game as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI including the game-clinching single with the bases loaded in the fifth. Weishoff came back out to start her second game of the day and she was dominant in the circle, allowing one run on three hits in five innings pitched. She walked one and struck out five as she retired eight straight hitters at one point.

Helaina Gallardo was perfect at the dish for the Warriors, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and Robinson went 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Warriors answered with six runs in the next three innings to take control of the game. In the fifth, De La Torre got things started with a one-out single to left. Robinson tripled her home and then Gallardo singled up the middle to plate Robinson and put the Cougars on the brink of defeat.

Karla Calderon flared a single to right and then Jasmine Krauss reached base on an error to load the bases and bring up Lewis to the dish.

The third-baseman delivered with a single over the shortstop to bring in pinch-runner Belle Estrada with the game-winning run and send the Warriors to their sixth straight win.

The Warriors will return to South Coast Conference, South Division action on Tuesday as they travel to Long Beach City College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
