Warriors Fall to No. 1 Cypress in Extras, Snapping Winning Streak

CYPRESS, Calif. – No. 5 El Camino College was one out away from pulling off an upset, but a stolen base and two defensive miscues helped No. 1 Cypress force extra innings and eventually walk off with a 4-3 win over the Warriors Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors (32-6) led 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Pitcher Haley Reed recorded the first two outs of the frame before Melanie Okazaki got aboard with an infield single to short, keeping the Chargers (38-0) hopes alive. Then, with Sydney McCollum at bat, Okazaki stole second base and then advanced on a throwing error by catcher Ashley Machado. Raelani Camez fielded the ball in center and had a play on Okazaki at third by the throw got away from Karla Calderon, allowing the Okazaki to bring in the tying run. Reed would get McCollum to pop up to end the inning, sending the game into extras.

After the Warriors came up empty in their half of the eighth, the Chargers got a leadoff double from Jenny Vazquez and then Alexis Zavala sacrificed her to third. The Warriors then intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases and set up a force play at any base, but Reed tossed a wild pitch that bounced off Machado and toward the Warriors dugout, allowing Vazquez to score and secure the win for the Chargers.

The Warriors saw their program-record 23-game winning streak come to an end while the Chargers won their 38th straight game of the year and remained undefeated on the season.

For the Warriors, Julianne Adamos and Kamryn Fisher each had multi-hit games while Reed was 1-for-4 at the dish with an RBI double.

Reed also tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits. She walked four and struck out two.

Machado, Brigid Antonelli and Ronni Silas each tallied a hit for the Warriors in the loss.

The Warriors will return to conference play on Tuesday, wrapping up the season with two games at Cerritos College. The teams will resume their game from March 21, which was suspended due to weather. The game will resume at 1:30 p.m. with the Warriors ahead 7-0 in the top of the third inning. The team will then play their regularly scheduled game after the conclusion of the resumption, which is also the Warriors final game of the regular season.
