Both Track & Field Teams Place First in Bakersfield Relays

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Both teams came out on top at the Bakersfield BC Relays on Saturday afternoon, with both teams placing first. The men's team finished the day with 137 points, while the women's team finished a good 58 points ahead of their nearest competition at 166.

"A number of competitive teams returned this year as well making for a well-rounded competition. We spread our athletes around in many events, not necessarily their specialty, and came out on top in team scoring in both genders," commented Coach Dean Lofgren.

Freshman Landon Sharp won 1st in the 200 meters at 22.30. Sophomore Israel Cardona participated in the 800 meters to finish it in 1:57.61 for a 1st place finish as well.

The Heinemann twins continue to take their events by storm. Sophomore Travis finished first in the javelin at 164-4, which puts him at 10th in the state while his brother, Kevin, finished in 2nd in 162-9.

Alex Castro, who is 8th in the state, led the Warriors in a 1-5 sweep in the 400 intermediate hurdles, finishing it at 54.67.

In the relays, the Warriors finished 1st in the 400 meter in 42.24 with a team consisting of Jerrett Anderson, Justin Alexander, Damian Bernard, and Landon Sharp. Josue Vargas, Alexander, Anderson, and Castro finished in 1600 meter in 3:21 to also place 1st.

The women's teams also had 1st place finishes in the relays. Ivery Cody, Sierra Peterson, Shukura Tyler, and Xiomara Perkins finished the 400 meter in 49.75 while Tyler, Peterson, Cody, and Victoria Porter finished in 4:07.25.

In the 200 meter dash, Peterson finished in 25.43 to claim the top spot. Tyler also came 1st in her event, finished the 100 meter hurdles at 15.08 while her teammate Cody came in 2nd (15.57)

Starring in the javelin once more was sophomore Nicole Clark, ranking in at 1st at 139-6. Freshman Maria Abe finished the pole vault in 1st at 2.68m while Clark finished right behind her in 2nd.

The Warriors took the top three spots in the long jump, with Tyler winning in 16-10. Hot on her trail was Yazmine Al-Uqdah who finished in 2nd in 16-8 while Peterson came in 3rd in 16-6. Al-Uqdah was also 2nd in the high jump at 5-2.

Next up for the Warriors, they head to UCLA to compete in the Legends Invitational. Field events are set to begin at 10am with the running events following at 2pm.
