Late Goal Gives Warrior Win Over Compton College

TORRANCE, Calif. - After completely dominating the run of play for the last seventy minutes, it looked like El Camino College would settle for a draw with Compton College.   Until, a foul in the box in the 88th minute gave the Warriors a penalty kick that Kevin Negrete buried.

The Warriors (7-6-5, 2-2-3) dominated the Compton Tartars (3-12-2, 0-5-1) for most of the game.  They outshot the Tartars 18 to 5 with 7 shots on goal, compared to Comptons 3 shots on goal.

Brandon Cardenas started in net for the Warriors and made three saves.  This was his first clean sheet of the season. Cardenas had to come up huge to start the game after Compton had two great looks within the first five minutes of the game.

Jean-Pierre Dejean Macksa had a couple great opportunities in the first half to score for the Warriors but Ruben Martinez came up with some great saves for Compton.

In the second half, the Warriors had multiple shots on goal but couldn't penetrate the Tartars goal.   Brian Burrell, Jean Pierre Dejean Macksa, and Andy Salguero each had shots that were saved by the Compton keeper.

After having two previous penalty shouts denied by the referee earlier in the game, the Warriors finally got the whistle in the 88th minute.  Kevin Negrete calmly slotted the ball through the left side past the keeper to put the Warriors up 1-0.

However, before the restart of play, the teams were shoving each other back and forth.  Brian Morales was issued a straight red card in the middle of the scrum.

The Warriors defense was able to hold strong for the final minutes of the game and secure the 1-0 victory.

The Warriors will wrap up conference play on Tuesday against Cerritos College.  Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
