Reyes, Chambers and Bogan’s Effort Not Enough against Santa Monica

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College trimmed down a double-digit deficit in the second half but could not get over the hump in a 93-84 loss to Santa Monica Thursday night in the opening day of the Paul Landreaux Classic hosted by ECC at the ECC North Gym.

The Warriors (3-9) cut an 18-point second-half deficit down to three points but the Corsairs (9-7) hit the shots and free throws they needed late to hold off the Warriors run.

Justin Reyes was on fire for ECC, leading all scorers with 27 points on 9-for-15 shooting including a 5-for-10 night from beyond the arc. Justin Chambers added 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting while Jamal Bogan had his best game of the year with 16 points, six rebounds and four blocks in 23 minutes off the bench.

For the Corsairs, Kyle Young led the way with 22 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Daisone Hughes scored 15, Jordan Wilson added 13 and Dakarai Hughes scored 11 in the victory.

The Warriors shot better from the field and from beyond the arc on Thursday but the battle on the glass proved to be the difference as the Corsairs out-boarded ECC 55-35 including a 26-5 edge on the offensive glass which turned into a 34-3 advantage in second-chance points.

The Warriors will finish off the Paul Landreaux Classic Friday night against Santiago Canyon. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Bakersfield 75, Irvine Valley 66: Anieus Medrano scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Renegades to victory over the Lasers in the first game of the day.

Santiago Canyon 97, San Diego Mesa 49: The Hawks unloaded from deep, hitting 17 3-pointers to blowout the Olympians. Paulo Araujo led the team with 20 points while Jordan Holden added 19.
