Warriors Unable to Keep Late Lead Over MiraCosta, Fall 106-108

TORRANCE, Calif. - The Warriors earned their second loss of the season, Friday night against MiraCosta College. El Camino was on a three game win streak and worked to earn another but MiraCosta took the win by their late buzzer beater, ending the match 106-108.

The Warriors gained the lead quickly with consecutive shots by Che Madrid, Brandon Guerrero and Jamal Heckard but at the end of the first half the Spartans were in the lead by a point.

The final five minutes of the second match saw the most action as both teams struggled to take the lead. With only 1:36 left Keywhon Powns made a shot that put the Warriors within grasp of tying the match while Harris put the Warriors in triple digits with his own bucket. The Spartans countered with their own to take back the lead but Munachiso Nwodili put the Warriors within one point from catching up to the Spartans. But it was Heckard's shot from within the paint to give the Warriors a single point lead with only :40 left on the clock. Though the Spartans continued to rebound, Powns made both his free throws to put the Warriors 106-105 with five seconds left in the game.

Though the Warriors worked rigorously to gain the lead, a three-point buzzer beater by the Spartan's Brett Hollins ultimately gave the visitors the win.

Powns lead the Warriors' offense with a total of 23 points and a three pointer of his own. Heckard was right behind him, contributing 22 points to the team's total and made both of his three point shots in the first half.

Unfortunately, the Warriors' defense was unable to keep out the Spartans. The Warriors now hold a 6-2 record on the season. El Camino returns home on Wednesday, Dec. 21st to face off against Fullerton College.
