Football Drops Home Opener to No. 3 Ventura

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College hung around in the first half against No. 3 Ventura but the game got away in the second half in a 58-37 defeat Saturday night at Featherstone Field at Murdock Stadium.

The Warriors (1-2) took a 17-14 lead in the first quarter and then overcame a nine-point deficit in the second to tie things up at 23 apiece. But the Pirates (3-0) rattled off 21 consecutive points and never looked back.

Dylan Guerra, Mehki Jordan and Jeliun Carter combined to throw for 254 yards and two touchdowns while Stephen Bradford Jr. racked up 95 yards on the ground on 16 carries.

As a team, the Warriors ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns while the Pirates ran for 189 yards on 36 carries. Overall, the Warriors outgained Ventura 440 to 355 in total offense but the coughed up the ball three times with two of them (fumble and interception) getting returned all the way to the endzone for Pirates touchdowns.

The Warriors were also penalized 13 times for 98 yards on the night.

Michael Kielbasa led the defense for ECC with nine tackles while Justin Sanchez added seven tackles and a fumble return for a touchdown.

The Warriors will return to action on Sept. 25 with a non-conference road game against San Bernardino Valley. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
