Warriors Trounce Moorpark in Home Opener

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College opened its home schedule in style Saturday afternoon with a dominating 56-2 victory over Moorpark at Murdock Stadium.

The Warriors (2-0) offense put up 515 yards of total offense and the defense pitched a shutout, forcing six Raiders (1-1) turnovers on the day.

Cole Klayman was outstanding for ECC as the quarterback, who entered the game for the first time in the second quarter, was a perfect 9-for-9 on his throws for 206 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball four times for 16 yards.

Stephon Robinson and Jarrell Mickens combined to make 10 catches for 234 yards and three of the Warriors six touchdowns on the day. Jacobi Hardy carried the ball three times for 45 yards and scored two touchdowns.

The game started out innocently enough as neither team could get much going with the first four drives of the game resulting in punts.

The Warriors would put up a field goal on the fifth drive, a 30-yard kick from Chris Valle to strike first and give ECC the early 3-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Warriors forced a fumble and recovered the ball at the Moorpark 27-yard line. Two plays later, Jerman Gotoy found Robinson in the end-zone for a 24-yard strike to put the Warriors up 10-0 and the floodgates opened.

The Warriors would go on to score 23 unanswered points to take a commanding lead in the second quarter.

The only blemish of the day for the Warriors came in the second quarter as one of the few punt attempts by ECC in the game went awry. The snap went high and out of the end-zone, resulting in a safety for the Raiders, the only points to visitors would get all day.

The Warriors would tack on another touchdown before the break and led 30-2 at halftime.

While the offense shined, the Warriors defense did its part with six takeaways including four interceptions by four different players. Taylor Flowers, Jayquan Richardson, Mana Pauu and Anthony Hale all recorded a pick for ECC while Flowers forced two fumbles and reigning SCFA National Central Conference Player of the Week De'Edward Cormier forced one loose ball. The Warriors also added three sacks on the day along with seven tackles for a loss.

The Warriors will stay home next week and host Grossmont at Murdock Stadium on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

NOTES: The Warriors honored the 1987 National Championship Team during a halftime ceremony on Saturday. Legendary coach John Featherstone was amongst those in attendance… ECC is now averaging 65 points per game through its first two games of the season.
