Warriors Overcome Slow Start to Cage Cougars, 41-21

Torrance, Calif. - The Warriors overcame a one-possession first half deficit, reeling off 34 straight points en route to a 41-21 season opening victory over LA Southwest on Saturday.

After a slow start, including a defensive touchdown by the Cougars, and going into the locker room at half down 14-7, the Warriors came out firing in the third. The team quickly counted a touchdown in under two minutes with starting quarterback sophomore David Sills (Wilmington, Del.) connecting with freshman wide receiver Mason Mulvihill (Culver City, Calif.) for 15 yards to knot the game up at 14 all.

The Warriors shut out the Cougars in the third, scoring 20 more points, including a 49-yard rush by freshman Johnnell Jackson (Harbor City, Calif.) for the go-ahead points. Jackson counted 105 yards on nine carries for the game.

On the day, Sills went 9-for-19 for 161 yards and four touchdowns. His top target was sophomore tight end Erik Henneman (Harvey, La.), who caught two of those scoring receptions with three total catches for 83 yards.

Defensively, linebackers sophomore Deadre Brewer (North Hills, Calif.) and freshman La'Brian Miller (Aurora, Colo.) and freshman defensive lineman Edgar Juarez (Hawthorne, Calif.) all counted five tackles each. Juarez counted the game's lone sack for eight yards, while counting two tackles for loss.

The football team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Moorpark College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
