Bio

Nate Fernley begins his 16th season as head coach for the Warriors in 2023. Fernley won two consecutive South Coast Conference Coach of the Year Awards from 2021-2022 and has led the Warriors to the CCCAA State Championships Final Four in two of the last four seasons including a runner-up finish in 2019. Since 2017, no other CCCAA baseball program has accumulated a better winning percentage than the Warriors (.728). During his tenure, the Warriors have boasted a .663 winning percentage, posting a 450-229 record. In that span no other South Coast Conference team has had more wins, overall or conference (238).

In 2022, Fernley led the Warriors to a 31-13 overall record. The Warriors went 17-7 in South Coast Conference action to finish in third in the conference, two games short of winning a third straight conference title. It was Fernley's sixth 30-win season (2022, 2019, 2017, 2012, 2010, 2007) and third in the last five years. 

In 2020, the Warriors were on a roll as they went 16-6 overall and 10-1 in South Coast Conference play. They were in sole possession of first place in the conference before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Along with 2020, the 2021 season would also go on to be shelved due to the pandemic. 

In 2019, the Warriors had one of the best years in the program's history, posting a state-best 40-9 overall record. The team won the South Coast Conference title and advanced to the CCCAA State Championships Final Four for the second time in three seasons. The Warriors would finish as the state runners-up for the second time in program history and first since 1951. 

In Coach Fernley's first year at the helm in 2007, the  Warriors won their first conference championship in 19 years. The Warriors repeated as conference champion in 2010, culminating in an appearance at the State Tournament Final Four for the first time since 1951. In 2017, Fernley led the Warriors back to the State Championship Final Four after posting a program-record 25-game winning streak. The team went 40-11 overall that season.

Overall, ECC has frequented the playoffs under the leadership of Fernley, making 10 Regional, six Super Regional and three final four appearances (2019, 2017, 2010).

Fernley has coached more than 100 student-athletes who have gone on to four-year programs with several moving on to the professional ranks.

Fernley took over at El Camino College after two years as recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at Long Beach City College. Fernley was an integral part of the Vikings' 2006 State Championship team. Under Fernley's direction the pitching staff ranked first in the South Coast Conference both years and fourth and first in California, respectively. 

As a player Fernley, played two years at Long Beach City College before transferring to BYU. Fernley was named a consensus All-American for the Cougars and led the NCAA with 16 wins. Post-graduation, Fernley signed with the Cleveland Indians organization. He played for three years in the Indians and Chicago Cubs minor league systems. Fernley was inducted into the Long Beach City College Hall of Fame in 2013.

Fernley graduated from BYU with a degree in Spanish. He earned his Master's in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy. Fernley's wife is Dara, and the couple have three children, Hallee, Jake and Baylee.
