Quick Start Propels Warriors Past Bakersfield in Series Opener

El Camino College jumped out to a big lead en route to a 14-4 victory over Bakersfield College Thursday night at Gerry Collis Field.

The Warriors scored nine runs before the Renegades ever got on the board. They put up five in the first inning and led 14-2 after the top of the sixth. Matthew Beserra and Jose Ruiz Jr. each drove in three runs on the night with Joseph Borges adding two RBI and two runs scored while going 2-for-4 at the dish.

Kenneth Haus picked up the victory, going six innings and allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. Joseph Brazil tossed the final three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three to pick up the save.

Overall, nine different Warriors registered a hit and five different players drove in at least one run.

For the Renegades, Zach Williams and Trey Harmon each tallied two hits but their pitching staff was taxed heavily as they needed six pitchers to get through the game. Starter Chris Diaz was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs, four of them earned. He surrendered just three hits but walked five of the 21 batters he faced.

The teams will tangle again Friday evening in game two of their three-game set at Gerry Collis Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
