Cooper Makes MLB Debut with Yankees

BOSTON – Two days ago, former El Camino College infielder Garrett Cooper was the starting first baseman in the Triple-A All-Star Game. On Friday night, he made his Major League Baseball debut as a member of the New York Yankees against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park.

Cooper was traded to the Yankees organization on Thursday and, after spending all season in Triple-A, was immediately called up to the Majors and got the start at first base for the Yankees in the first game after the MLB All-Star break.

The Auburn, Ala. Native went 0-for-4 on the night as the Yankees fell short, 5-4, against the Red Sox. According to BaseballReference.com, Cooper became the 11th Warriors player to play in MLB.

Cooper made his MLB debut after leading the Pacific Coast League with a .366 batting average in 75 games played while playing for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Cooper tallied 102 hits including 29 doubles and 17 home runs with 82 RBI. He also led the PCL in walks (33), slugging percentage (.652) and OPS (1.080) during the first half of the season.

In two seasons at ECC, Cooper played in 75 games, making 74 starts. He tallied 85 hits including 20 doubles, two triples and seven home runs in his Warriors career and he was a part of the 2010 CCCAA State Final Four squad, the last Warriors team to make the CCCAA State Championships until the 2017 squad made an appearance.

Cooper went on to transfer to Auburn University and was drafted in Round Six of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.
