Former Warriors Standout Garrett Cooper Gets the Start in Triple-A All Star Game

TACOMA, Wash. – Former El Camino College infielder Garrett Cooper (2010-11) was named a starter for the Pacific Coast League All Stars in the Triple-A All Star game played Tuesday at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.

Cooper went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and put the PCL All-Stars out in front for good as they scored a 6-4 victory on Wednesday night.

Cooper earned his spot on the team after leading the PCL with a .366 batting average in 75 games played while playing for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Cooper tallied 102 hits including 29 doubles and 17 home runs with 82 RBI. He also led the PCL in walks (33), slugging percentage (.652) and OPS (1.080) during the first half of the season.

In two seasons at ECC, Cooper played in 75 games, making 74 starts. He tallied 85 hits including 20 doubles, two triples and seven home runs in his Warriors career and he was a part of the 2010 CCCAA State Final Four squad, the last Warriors team to make the CCCAA State Championships until the 2017 squad made an appearance.

Cooper went on to transfer to Auburn University and was drafted in Round Six of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He was called up to Triple-A in 2016 and is in the midst of his first full season at that level.

On Thursday, Cooper was traded from the Brewers organization to the New York Yankees organization. He assigned to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the 2016 Triple-A National Champions, according to the Yankees Public Relations Department's twitter account.

Cooper has a chance to get called up rather quickly as the team released first baseman Chris Carter on Monday, who started at first in 62 of the team's 86 games so far this season. The two remaining healthy players listed as first basemen on the team's depth chart have played a combined 24 games total this season.
