Warriors Outlast Glendale in Marathon Day of Baseball to Advance to Super Regionals

TORRANCE, Calif. – It took seven hours and seven minutes of baseball and used up all of the daylight Saturday had to offer, but No. 5 El Camino College outlasted No. 12 seed Glendale to advance to the California Community College Baseball Super Regionals, winning the series two games to one.

GAME TWO: Glendale 6, El Camino 2

A game that featured the same amount of combined walks as there were hits, Glendale managed to even up the series against the Warriors with a 6-2 victory in the first game of the day. Warriors starter Cassius Hamm struggled with his control all day, issuing a career high nine walks on the day. Despite the control issues, Hamm allowed just four runs on four hits in five and 2/3 innings of work and left the game with the Warriors trailing by just two runs.

But the Warriors could not get much going offensively as they managed just two runs on eight hits and only one RBI on the day. Ty Conrad had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with the lone RBI. Cody Wissler also had two hits on the day.

The win for the Vaqueros, who were the designated home team for game two, forced a winner-take-all game three, where the Warriors managed to come out ahead.

GAME THREE: El Camino 20, Glendale 8

As Saturday afternoon turned into evening, the Warriors overcame an early three-run hole and capitalized on 14 walks issued by Glendale pitching to rout the Vaqueros, 20-8, to clinch the series and advance to the next round in the CCCAA postseason.

In a marathon game that lasted four hours and four minutes, the Warriors pounded out 14 hits and scored 20 runs for the third time this season to run away with the victory. Wissler went 5-for-6 with a double and three RBIs in the series clincher. Noah Barba also drove in three runs, going 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.

Things started off fine for ECC as Trevor Casanova led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to deep center field to put the Warriors up 1-0.

But the Vaqueros responded with four runs in the second inning thanks to four walks, two singles, a throwing error and two sacrifice flies. Luckily for the Warriors, reliever Trevor Talpas limited the damage as he got Bruno Teramoto to pop up to second with the bases loaded to keep ECC within three.

The Warriors would not trail long as they plated five runs in their half of the second, two of them on bases-loaded walks, one on a ground out and one on a sacrifice fly. Casanova's RBI that started the scoring was the only run scored on a base hit in the frame.

Overall, the second inning took one hour and five minutes to complete, saw three combined relievers come into the game and had nine runs score on just five combined hits, with the Warriors coming out of the frame with a 6-4 lead.

The Vaqueros trimmed it to one with a run in the fourth on an RBI double from Cristian Montes.

But the Warriors padded the lead with three runs in their half of the fourth and then put the game completely out of reach with a nine-run bottom of the fifth inning that lasted 55 minutes and saw 14 Warriors come up to bat in the frame.

With College of the Canyons falling in the first round, the Warriors are one of the top four seeds remaining in the playoffs and will host Pasadena in the Super Regional round beginning Friday afternoon at Warrior Field.
