D’Angelo and Dorr Advance, Ortiz and Griffiths Come Up Short

TORRANCE, Calif. --- Ryan D'Angelo and Bridget Dorr scored two wins while Sophia Ortiz and Erica Griffiths came up one win short on Friday in day one of the 3C2A Southern California Beach Volleyball Pairs Regionals at the ECC Sand Courts.

The No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, D'Angelo and Dorr took care of business early with two sweeps to advance to the quarterfinals on day two.

They opened the day with a 2-0 (21-12, 21-16) win over the No. 32 seed of Kamryn Briggs and Brianna Bowyer. In their second match, D'Angelo and Dorr needed a little extra work against a familiar foe but still came through with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) victory over the No. 17 duo of Candace Ceballos and Angelina Griego.

Meanwhile, Ortiz and Griffiths entered the day as the No. 13 seed but found themselves in a hole early, falling to the No. 20 team of Alba Romanos-Garcia and Kylie Ibbotson from Ventura, 2-0 (23-21, 21-18).

The loss dropped the Warriors' duo to the consolation bracket where they would need to win out on the day to qualify for the 3C2A State Championships as the 18th seed.

They got win No. 1 by downing the duo of Jenni Solano and Emily Gutierrez of Cerritos, 2-0 (21-9, 21-17).

Ortiz and Griffiths would need one last win on the day to take the 18th seed but it was not to be as they fell 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) to the No. 25 team of Emily Eltrich and Victoria Goff of San Diego Mesa.

D'Angelo and Dorr will return tomorrow morning and have already qualified for the 3C2A Pairs State Championships but will be playing for seeding. Their first match in the quarterfinals will be against No. 12 duo of Grace Hazelton and Larissa Dakoske from Moorpark.
