Coach Stanbury has been coaching at El Camino College since 1989 and since then has won two National records, two State records and five Individual State Championships. His athletes have finished in the top 10 in State Championships while the women’s program has won five Team Conference titles and the men one. Over 100 of his athletes have placed in the All-Americans list, and several water polo and swimming athletes have received awards and scholarships.

Coach Stanbury was responsible for the beginning of women's water polo as an official sport in 1995 while he served a term as president of the Community College Coaches Association. After a seven-year absence, Coach Stanbury was also responsible for bringing back the men’s water polo team to El Camino in 1989.

His coaching career began in 1974 in Santa Barbara, Calif. and has coached numerous club teams at different levels including Junior National, National, and Olympic Trials swimmers. Over 150 aquatic athletes have gone on to become Los Angeles County Beach Lifeguards and has directed swim lesson programs where he has taught more than 14,000 children to swim. Coach Stanbury was a part of the Navy Seals for three years.

During his college years, Stanbury was a Community College All-American swimmer and NCAA Division National Championships qualifier in swimming and water polo. He held the school record at UC Santa Barbara in the 200 Backstroke.
