El Camino College Hall of Fame Committee Announces 29th Class
HALL OF FAME REGISTRATION FORM AND INFORMATION
The El Camino College Hall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce the induction of the 2019 Athletics Hall of Fame Class, which will be inducted on May 23, 2019 on the campus of El Camino College.
The 13 individual inductees and solo team selection this year exemplified what it means to be a member of the Warriors during their time at El Camino College. The inductees span nine sports and more than 65 years of excellence on the field of play.
The 29th class of the ECC Athletics Hall of Fame include:
- David Austin (Men's Swimming – 2008-09): Won the 3-meter diving state championship and set the state record in 2009. Also placed third in the 1-meter diving event. Was a two-time state qualifier in both events despite never having participated in diving prior to attending ECC.
- Vic Buttler (Baseball – 2000): An All-American and All-Southern California selection as a member of the Warriors baseball team. He was drafted in the 14th round of the 2000 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played eight years in the Minor Leagues. He is currently the Head Coach for the baseball team at Westchester High School.
- Charlie Brown (Men's Track & Field – 1976-77): A two-time state champion in the pole vault for the Warriors. Continues to hold the school record in the event with a mark of 17-4 ¼. Transferred to UCLA on track and field scholarship. His daughter McKenna and son Kyle are both currently on NCAA Division I Track and Field programs at Cal and Yale respectively. Charlie currently practices law in Carlsbad, Calif.
- Lawanda Cabell-Simmons (Women's Track & Field – 1984): Won the 1984 state championship in the 400m. She was also a member of the Conference, Southern California and State Champion 1600m relay team with the Warriors. Currently ranks seventh all-time in ECC history with a time of 24.44 in the 200m and second all-time with a time of 53.72 in the 400m. Also holds the school record with the 800m and 1600m relay teams including a national record 3:37.75 in the 1600m. She is currently a teacher at Etiwanda High School.
- Matt Engle (Football – 2003): Named the 2003 Mission Conference Player of the Year and was an All-America Honorable Mention. He was named the Offensive Player of the Game in the 2003 Southern California Bowl after going 15-for-27 for 180 yards and leading ECC to a 21-14 win over Chaffey. Engle helped lead the Warriors to an 8-3 record in 2003 and passed for 2,656 yards and 21 touchdowns. He would go on to transfer to UC Davis to wrap up his collegiate career.
- Rochelle Esparza (Women's Volleyball – 1997-98): Named the South Coast Conference Most Valuable Player in 1997 and 1998. She was also named to the All-State Team in 1998. In two years with ECC, Esparza helped lead the Warriors to a 22-5 record and State Runner-up finish in 1997 and then an 18-5 record in 1998 with a seventh place finish in state.
- Coy Hall (Football – 1971): The quarterback was named the team MVP and earned a JC All-American selection after helping lead the team to the 1971 state championship. The team went 11-1 with Hall under center.
- Dan Hatano (Wrestling – 1982-83): Won the 1982 and 1983 State Championship in the 142-pound division and was named Most Outstanding wrestler.
- Ralph Hughes (Football – 1963): An All-American at El Camino College and selection to the ECC Football All-Decade Team for the 1960s.
- Jon Robertson (Football – 1968): Was named All-Conference as a defensive back and a kick returner. Hold the ECC record for most interceptions in a season.
- Latario Rachal (Football – 1991-92): A wide receiver and kick returner for the 1991-92 ECC football teams. Was named the team's MVP and earned All-State and All-American honors. Hauled in 91 catches for 1,773 yiards and 14 touchdowns in his Warriors career. Also posted 47 kick returns for 1,270 yards and two touchdowns. Transferred to Fresno State and went on to play two years in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers.
- Erica Shaw (Women's Water Polo & Swimming – 2007, 2009): Earned First Team All-Conference and All-Southern California in water polo both years of competition. She currently ranks second in school history in the 50 backstroke (28.03); third in the 100 backstroke (1:00.42); and third in the 200 backstroke (2:13.64). She earned All-American honors in the 50 and 100 backstroke in 2007 and 2009.
- Chun Young-Shin (Women's Tennis – 2012-13): Finished ninth at the 2012 CCCAA State Championships in both singles and doubles action. In 2013, she went 19-2 overall in singles competition and helped lead the Warriors to the South Coast Conference Championship, their first since 2006. She advanced to the semifinals at the CCCAA State Championships and won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Sophomore Player of the Year Award.
- 1950 Football Team: The squad in 1950 was the first conference champion in school history. The team went 8-1-1 under head coach Amby Schindler in the program's fourth year of existence.
The 29th class of the ECC Athletics Hall of fame with be inducted on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at El Camino College. The evening will get underway with a social hour at 5 p.m. followed by the presentation ceremony at 6 p.m.
